Bernard Shaw sends an invitation to Winston Churchill for the premiere of Pygmalion. And with classic Irish sarcasm, he added the following note:
"The invitation is for two. Bring a friend, if you have one."
Churchill then sent the following note to Bernard Shaw, with whom he had never been on good terms, but whom he could not stop seeing and whose humor he admired very much:
"I won't come to the premiere, but I will come to the second play, if it is staged again."
And he continues as follows: "Of all human values, courage is the one to be most respected, because, as the saying goes, courage is the value that secures all other values."
This story, which I heard from an old friend of mine, suddenly came to my mind while listening to Bülent Gardiyanoğlu last night. When Bülent was talking about the tests of people, he divided them into four categories: money, health, relationships and courage, and once again underlined the value of courage. A person who did not dare to start a business had no chance of losing or winning. Even to lose, one had to have the courage to try.
Diogenes knew that there were people who admired the life he lived, "I am a very respectable dog!" he would say: "But none of those who admire me have the courage to hunt with me."
Isn't courage in itself a value necessary for living. Life itself is courage. Even the most cowardly person can become a lion and make a move in a pinch. But we have fears that we have accumulated over the years with our own experiences that we bring from ancestors and karma. Fears of worthlessness, fears of powerlessness, fears of blame, fears of loneliness, fears of death and many more fears that we cannot name. Every human being who is not in awakening, who is not in awareness, harbors one or many kinds of fears subconsciously, like the potential for courage.
We say yes to everything because of the fear of being excluded, rejected, disapproved, unappreciated. We buy gifts and try to win love because of the fear of lack of love. Because of the fear of being deceived and losing, we claim our loved ones as property and establish pressure and authority. We become workaholics because of the fear of failure. We don't know how to share because of the fear of lack of money and poverty. Fear of helplessness and helplessness makes us play the victim. We cannot get rid of our addictions because of the fear of suffering and helplessness. We are afraid of trust, afraid of change, controlling and doing everything ourselves, getting tired as we do it, never having enough time, becoming aggressive as we don't have enough time... I have many of these. I have been doing healing work for years. We have to do exercises tirelessly, we have to allocate at least 1 hour a day as purification, cleansing and healing time for ourselves. You can download free of charge from Bülent Gardiyanoğlu's website and you can do it until you are free from your fears.
On the other hand, Churchill liked Bernard Shaw's courage, his wit and humor, his sharp intelligence. In fact, as many great and intelligent people as there are in this world, most of them have not only a sharp mind but also a sense of humor. Being humorous and witty makes life easier and more fun. The world would be a more difficult place without smiling and laughing. Our soul may be immortal, but we are unique and one and only as we are. There is no one else but me, no one else but you. There is no one like you. And you will never be the same again. What a wonderful thing, what an honor for a single human being. What more reason do you need to smile and cheer up, to be witty and funny?
When Socrates was sentenced to death, his wife came to say goodbye to him, crying:
- Oh Socrates! You are being killed unjustly.
Socrates replied laughing: "Or would you want me to be killed justly?"
He also said to his friends who were mourning for him: "Please be cheerful and say that you are only burying my body."
